Lots of consultants I know started their consultancy because they were sick and tired of being employed and not being valued. 

They wanted to do meaningful work, they wanted to do HR properly, in their own way and they wanted a better work / life balance so that they could spend more time with their families or doing the things they love. 

So, they took "the leap" as Sarah Hamilton-Gill would say and created their own consultancy. 

For the first couple of months things were going great. 

They managed to pick up some work from their existing network, they attended a few networking meetings and got some referrals. 

The clients were random and the work was mixed. Contracts and handbooks. The odd project here and there. 

Everything was sold via an hourly, day or project rate. All time based. Nothing really repeatable. 

Then things started to slow down a bit... 

Others found some associate work, or even contracted themselves out 1 or 2 days a week (which felt like they were going to work for someone else again) but they needed the cash so didn't have any other choice. 

Then new work completely dried up and they didn't have any sort of pipeline to fall back on. 

And the stress of making enough money to survive, pay the mortgage, bills and look after themselves / family started to kick in... 

In terms of growing the business, they didn't really know how and didn't have any sort of plan. 

In terms of marketing, they found it a dark art. 

They heard people talk about avatars and target markets but didn't know what to do and were scared of restricting themselves or turning work away. 

In terms of packaging their services up or creating repeatable income, they found it really difficult, they didn't know what to do for the best and everyone is doing it completely differently so that doesn't help either. 

They tried to get some clients onto a retainer and they knew about 3 tier plans, but didn't know how to create one and didn't want to offer unlimited support in case some clients abused their time.

 And then they got stuck. 

Even though they're great HR consultants, the skills gap of being a business owner became glaringly obvious and risky.

Some found part time work again. Others gave up completely and got a full time job again. 

And others managed to keep their heads above water, but are working ridiculous hours at the expense of everything else.
